From our CEO

Greetings from our national office where there has been much excitement in recent days over the shortlisting of The Frog and the Fish by Chris Parker for Australian Christian Book of the Year! This is certainly something we can celebrate as a community. This little book has had a huge impact across our country in some most interesting places. From youth camps to nursing homes (seriously!) people are engaging with this little gem.

It’s been a bit of a month of cel ebration as it was also a great ple asure to announce to our CEN community, that Carinya Christian School has joined us as members. Carinya has approximately 800 students over two campuses (Tamworth and Gunnedah) and is a delightful community seeking to serve God in all things. David Jones is the principal of the school and Ross Fotheringham is the board chair. We will look forward to welcoming both gentlemen, the rest of the board, and staff to many of our CEN events.

Two successful conferences ran in Melbourne recently. The annual Developing Leaders, and Teaching and Learning Conferences. What a ple asure to engage with young, and more experienced leaders, from our schools. Thanks for your support of these important events.

As winter sets in, I’m going to make you jealous as my family and I head off to warmer climates (North America) for long service leave. I’ll be back in September and look forward to engaging with you then.

Michelle

From our Institute Director

It is an ex citing time for the National Institute for Christian Education, CEN’s postgraduate teacher training arm. From November 2018 (subject to federal government approval), the National Institute will commence a new accreditation relationship with Alphacrucis College. To continue to have National Institute courses taught by National Institute staff is a great privilege, one that we will recognize as a community in 2019 during our 40th year cel ebrations. The move to Alphacrucis will open up a . . .

NEW BOOK The Christian School as Community

This new book was launched at the recent CEN National Conference. It explores the place and importance of community within the Christian school. Driven by the ideas and insights of Dr Stuart Fowler, Martin Hanscamp has unfolded a biblical view of community and how it is nuanced within an organisation. He presents the importance of recognising God-given ‘office’ and the spe cial authority that each role has within an effective community in the Christian school context.

This resource is helpful for all those involved with Christian schooling but especially those involved with governance, executive leadership, and association development.

Biblical Threads Banner

The National Institute has produced a durable hangable wall banner that you can pur chase for your school. Many schools that have engaged with the Transformation by Design resource for curriculum design have suggested that an additional resource featuring a single summary of the biblical response ‘threads’ would be helpful.

Click here for more information and to pur chase a banner (or two) for your school.

NEW Board Members’ Handbook

The Board Members’ Handbook was launched and distributed at our National Conference in May. A great resource for all boards to engage with and use as a reference gu ide. We have already had to reprint more copies following the flurry of orders.

School Financial Survey

Just a reminder, that as mentioned at the CEN National Conference, the Somerset Education fee (financial survey) will now be embedded in the CEN national membership fee.  This is a very important and helpful survey. If you are keen to understand more about your schools’ survey results, there is an opp ortunity at our upcoming Governance Conference to engage with this more practically.

Single Touch Payroll Information

During June we sent out a helpful document to all business managers and principals around legislation changes to employer reporting which came into effect on 1 July. This affects all employers that employ over 20 people.  We are grateful for the advice and support of our friends at Christian Super.

National Conference and AGM

Thanks for all those who responded to the survey response following our National Conference and AGM.  It was a great time of fellowship and learning. We have noted the helpful suggestions for next year.

Developing Leaders Conference

Melbourne’s inner urban Carlton was the ve nue for this year’s Developing Leaders Conference – a cool hipster place so different from the tropical warmth of Darwin DLC in 2017. But the vibe was just as strong as emerging leaders were encouraged to be ‘transformers’ in their schools as passionate and proactive . . .

Teaching and Learning Conference

Forty leaders of teaching and learning, and classroom practitioners from CEN schools (and beyond) gathered for this year’s conference in Melbourne. Run in parallel with the Developing Leaders Conference, it was a wonderful time of fellowship, deeper thinking, and inspiration towards the rich vis ion of Christian education.

Start thinking about if you will come, or who you might send, next year to TALC19.

Torrens Valley AGM

It was lovely to be a part of the AGM at Torrens Valley in May.  What a vibrant and active association to engage with.

Prime Minister visit to Leighland Christian School

Staff and students at Leighland Christian School were delighted to welcome the Prime Minister, Mr Malcolm Turnbull to their Ulverstone campus a few weeks back.  The prime minister met with staff and students, read to younger kids and even did some pai nting on his hands. Yes, we know that there is a strategy in such a vi sit, but what a lovely thing for the students to remember.
