From the CEO
Welcome to a new year as we journey together in the task of honouring Christ in education. In the national office we are in the midst of a significant ‘changing of the guard’ as Bob Johnston hands over his AACS duties to Martin Hanscamp and some of his CEN duties to Michelle Dempsey. Craig Humphris will also assume some of these tasks in his role of Business Manager. Chris Parker will continue in his role in Communications while also teaching with the National Institute and now editing the Christian Teachers Journal. Allie Oweis has joined the team assisting with CEPA as well as driving a project in professional learning.
The National Executive consists of:
Ken Dickens (CEO/Principal)
Michelle Dempsey (National Coordinator)
Craig Humphris (Senior Finance Officer)
Chris Parker (Executive Officer Communications)
Michelle will assume most of the executive functions and work closely with the Board, while I focus more on the National Institute as we work together. Much of the CEN information you receive in future will be coming from Michelle.
I look forward to sharing with many of you at the CEN Executives Conference in April.
Introducing Michelle Dempsey
Hi There! I’m Michelle and it gives me great pleasure to be able to serve you and our organisation in the role of National Coordinator (whilst keeping an eye on the Victorian crew in my ongoing role as State Executive Officer for Victoria). I only started a couple of weeks ago and I am still working out what the role means and looks like, but I feel excited about what lies ahead and hope that I can be instrumental in building stronger bonds across our organisation and being a great support, ensuring that the quality of the services we provide are effective, helpful, affordable, and relevant to your situation.
I am thrilled to be working with Ken and the executive team and hope to be a great support to them. Although I am based in Melbourne and live in the Dandenong Ranges with my two gorgeous kids and wonderful husband (he’s actually pretty gorgeous as well) I will be working from our national office a couple of days per month. I look forward to meeting up with you sometime.
Introducing Martin Hanscamp
It’s day 4 in my new role as the Executive Officer of the Australian Association of Christian Schools and I’m writing my first AACS eNews and feeling just a little overwhelmed and wondering what I’ve plunged into. At the same time I’m delighted to be advocating for Christian schools and supporting their growth as, together, we seek the kingdom of God in education. What a challenge. I’m up for it. It’s so interesting how, with hindsight, you can see the Lord’s leading and it makes sense that you land in a particular role, even though you feel inadequate and ‘not quite ready’.

Introducing Kathy Pereira
My names Kathy and I am really excited about working more directly towards the goal of Christian education again. I will be filling Geoff Hewitt’s (large) shoes in the role of NSW State Executive Officer. I am looking forward to serving the schools and their associations in New South Wales and heading up the planing for this year’s state conference.
Introducing Allie Oweis
Hi, I’m Allie Oweis and I’m going to be helping with the Christian Educators’ Professional Association (CEPA) in the capacity of Professional Learning Coordinator. My role will include nurturing the vision, promotion, moderating, and supporting forum moderators…just to name a few. I hope to stimulate discussion and collaboration between educators especially on how we can support one another in the task of Christian education.
I am also facilitating the roll out of the new national professional learning workshops through the National Institute of Christian Education.

New look Nurture
We are really pleased to be able to present a remodelled Nurture in 2014. Through the pages of this magazine it is our aim to equip and encourage parents in their families’ journey through Christian Education. Our schools don’t stand in isolation. They form part of bigger family which is brought together by CEN. It is our desire that through Nurture we will be able to help families foster and strengthen their child’s faith, help parents gain a greater understanding of what Christian education is, what a biblical worldview means and the importance of partnering with their school.
The new look Nurture will include a fresh modern flavour. There will be a mixture of articles on Christian Education, parenting tips, tools, book reviews and news from our family of schools. The magazine will also be interactive giving our readers the opportunity to access more information and multimedia sites.
The Victorian principals look forward to hosting all principals and executive leadership in March at the 2014 Executives’ Conference. The conference will be held at the Four Seasons Sheraton in Geelong and we trust it will be a time of inspiration, collaboration and refreshment.
The conference commences in the late afternoon on Monday 24th March and concludes with a conference dinner on Thursday 27th.
Speakers include; Mark Sayers, Sarah Deutscher, Ken Dickens and Phil Cummins. The conference also includes an all day Mystery Tour.

There is a comprehensive timetable of PD courses across the country now on our website. CCE and God’s Story are PD courses designed for whole school communities and a number of associations have already experienced these this year. Later this year a CCE 2 will be available focussing on programming, pedagogy, and people within the Christian school community.
The first trimester of our postgraduate program will begin in a couple of weeks. Please make this known to your teachers and encourage enrolments before they close. Not everyone will complete a postgraduate course but leaders should be targeting people for future leadership in our schools and supporting those people to study with the National Institute for Christian Education.
Simply type your responses directly into the form and email to email@example.com before the 18th of February.
Semester 1 dates: 18th February – 6th June 2014.
Remember, CEPA members receive a $50 discount on unit fees.
We also have FEE-HELP available.
We offer a huge congratulations to Ken Dickens on the completion and now acceptance of his Doctorate in education. Many of you will know how hard Ken has worked to achieve this. We are delighted to celebrate with Ken and feel so privileged that his Godly wisdom, insights and intellectual capacity are something we get to experience as he leads our movement and continues his involvement in training teachers to think and teach biblically.
