From the CEO
I suspect that you are all at various stages of winding up the school term or possible already on a relaxing and refreshing break from having the students around. The news items below are a combination of updates from recent National Board discussion from its September Retreat and other items that may be of interest.
Expressions of interest for National Coordinator
The National Board is calling for expressions of interest for a new position in the national leadership team. A National Coordinator is to be appointed initially at a .6 FTE from the beginning of 2014. The role will involve driving the various aspects of CEN’s operation and will cover many executive functions. The National coordinator will be responsible to the National Board through the Chief Executive Officer. Ken will retain this CEO position although his main focus will be on the National Institute for Christian Education.

New Schools Strategy Taskforce
The National Board has been working on the Terms of Reference for a taskforce to investigate models of support for new and struggling schools. Seven aspects of investigation have been identified and local teams will shortly be established to begin working on specific aspects. The findings will then be synthesised into a coordinated strategy. The scope of this exercise has broadened significantly since ‘Planting New Schools’ was adopted as a priority.

Bethel Christian School at Tatura recently closed down. The affairs of the association have been finalised and at a recent ‘celebration’, where Michelle Dempsey (Victorian SEO) represented CEN, a cheque of $34000 was presented as a gift to the CEN Development Fund. We are grateful for this gift and trust that Bethel’s loss may help other schools in time of difficulty. We commend the Board, Principal and Bethel community for the way the school closure was conducted and the mature and dignified way it eventually ‘closed its doors’. An encouraging letter was received from Bethel.

The Institute Consortium
There are a number of associations that have committed to the Institute Consortium for the following two years. This is greatly appreciated and these associations will be invoiced according to that commitment at the beginning of 2014. We thank them for their commitment to supporting teacher training in Christian education in Australia where the majority of our teachers are trained initially by secular institutions.
National office staff or Board members will follow up potential contributors both for the remainder of this year and also for the following years. In our new business model an ongoing sizeable commitment to the Institute Consortium is crucial.
ITEC15 Christian education conference
You would have been notified recently regarding the need to budget now for our 2015 International Conference on Christian education being held in Melbourne on 13-15 July 2015. Early-bird discounts will apply next year for this event. We ask that you start planning now for this event so that as many staff can experience the inspiration and professional development similar to that experienced in the 2011 Darwin event.
In the last eNews we indicated that there were a number of Principal vacancies within our schools around the country. I am pleased to advise that two of those positions have been filled.
- Narelle Sketcher has been appointed to Mount Evelyn Christian School
- Chris Prior has been appointed to Bayside Christian School
CEN was happy to assist in both of these processes and congratulate the Boards on their work and the successful appointees.

CEN Executives Conference 2014
A Victorian committee has begun planning for our next Principals Conference to be held in Geelong. Detailed information will follow, but for now, please save the date!
March 24th – 28th, Four Points Sheraton, Geelong Victoria
You will note that it is entitled ‘Executives Conference’. In past events some schools have included others from their leadership teams. At a time when we have various models of leadership, this would seem appropriate. If you have any concerns with this arrangement I would be happy to pass your comments to the committee.
Points for prayer
Prayer for all of the above matters would be appreciated. The matters below concerning members of our family especially need your prayers:
Horizon Christian School’s Board Chair, Shane Cunningham’s wife Carolyn, died on Sunday morning. They have 3 young daughters, all less than 10 years old. Caroline was a teacher at Horizon before she became ill. Caroline’s funeral will be at the Horizon School Gym on Monday the 23 September at 1:30pm. Please pray for Shane, his daughters and the Horizon community.
Continue to pray for Geoff Bateman (CEO of NT Christian Schools) and his wife Sue as she undergoes chemo-therapy.
Call for papers/articles
The next edition of the Christian Teachers Journal will have a focus on professional development with Christian education. There is an opportunity here for folk to submit a potential article on the theory, best practice or case studies of professional development within their school.
Submission date: 10th December
