Recent Annual General Meeting (update)
Representatives of the CEN community came together for a National Conference and AGM last week-end in Canberra. It was a shorter program with less emphasis on business and more opportunities to grow in our understanding of Christian education. Delegates were able to attend three workshops and listen to two inspiring addresses. A feature for me was the opportunity to praise God together in singing. In this we were led by a team from Emmaus on one day and Michael Bunyan and his family on the following day. Michael is the Head of Music at Southern Highlands Christian school and he has provided his arrangement of Bless the Lord which can be downloaded here.
The Conference Dinner was a great occasion that was organised by Michelle Dempsey and Sue Goudswaard. We heard lots of encouraging stories about what God is doing around Australia in our school communities. Of special note were two stories. The first was the co-operative effort of CEN Victoria, South Coast and Chairo communities to work out a positive ongoing arrangement for Christian education at Leongatha. The second was the account of the Ed Trans Conference on indigenous education. Here we were informed about a number of indigenous communities desperate to have a Christian community controlled school.
The other feature of the dinner was a farewell to Sue Mitchel and Jack Mechielsen. For Jack a number of delegates wore T-shirts emblazoned with ‘Farewell Uncle Jack’ and we heard a rendition of a version of the Aunty Jack song (for those old enough to remember) sung by the original cast members (courtesy of Bill Rusin).
Update: discussion between CEN and CSA
At the recent AGM, the following motion was presented – “That the CEN Board should continue discussions with the CSA Board and work towards a closer working relationship, such as in the form of an alliance, where resources are shared.”

Building and growing your association
Ken Dickens presented insightful reflections at the recent AGM on not only the need to focus on building our associations but insights into the generational issues that need to be considered. Ken also made practical suggestions for boards to consider in their strategic planning.
